Abstract

1,031,223. Developing electrostatic images. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. Jan.25, 1963 [Jan. 27, 1962],No. 3299/63. Heading G2H. Latent electrostatic images on electrophotographic material are rendered visible by contact with a developer powder consisting of an electrically conductive particulate carrier and a dyed toner in a chamber in which the powder is vigorously whirled by a rotating electromagnetic field. Preferably the field is produced by a stator excited with three-phase current. The electrophotographic material may be moved continuously through the whirled powder in a closed chamber of circular or other cylindrical or prismatic form having entry and exit slots in the end walls, and the whirling action may be assisted by mounting with the chamber a hollow cylindrical rotor of non- ferrous metal having blade-or screw-shaped paddles extending into the chamber interior. A fixed core of soft iron or dynamo sheet may be disposed within the chamber to intensify the field. If desired the whirling chamber may be evacuated. The carrier particles may be of iron or copper, brass or aluminium alone or with iron.
