Abstract
1,030,705. Metallurgical converters. PINTSCH BAMAG A.G. Feb. 14, 1963 [July 2, 1962], No. 6102/63. Heading F4B. A metallurgical converter has axially spaced radial annuli 5 welded to the shell in planes normal to the converter axis, said annuli being formed with staggered air holes 16, and also has longitudinal bands 7 applied to said shell and passing under the annuli. The bands 7 are welded to end cones at the mouth and bottom of the converter, Fig. 5 (not shown). Substantial steel bands 12 welded to the outer ends of the central annuli and having bridge pieces 13, Fig. 3 (not shown), welded to the bands 7 function as trunnion rings. Thinner metal bands 14 are welded to the lower annuli and screening strips 15 to the upper ones screening them from foaming slag &c. The lowermost conduit 17 formed by the annuli 5 and bands 14 is formed with diametrically opposed air entries 18 associated in the working position of the converter with air nozzles 24 connected to fans 26, Fig. 5 (not shown). The degree of supplementary cooling is controlled by temperaturesensitive devices 28 disposed over the shell. In a modification, Figs. 7-11 (not shown), the supplementary cooling is omitted, the air openings in the annuli being enlarged, and said annuli are keyed to the longitudinal bands 7 by wedges at their intersection points. The annuli may be formed with outer thickened rims of round or square section, Fig. 12 (not shown), and the converters may have known watercooled trunnions.
