Abstract

<PICT:1030271/C6-C7/1> Shaped sintered cemented carbides, nitrides bromides or silicides of metals of the metals of the 4th, 5th or 6th groups of the Periodic Table such as Ti, Ta, N6, Mo and W, are formed by moulding a powder mixture of the carbide and a lubricant such as fat oils, wax or paraffin, altering the cross section of the compact in the plastic state by upsetting, drawing, rolling or other plastic working and then sintering the compact. The process is particularly suited to an extrusion process as shown in Fig. 1 where the extruded rod or tube 6 is further shaped by upsetting the projecting end by means of a punch 8. The end of the rod or tube projecting from the extruding nozzle or guide 7 may be heated to 40 DEG -60 DEG C. by a coil 9 to improve the plasticity and after the upsetting operation the fabricated shape is cut by cutter 11 and the extrusion and upsetting operation is then repeated.
