Abstract

1,029,296. Liquid fuel burners. FALLS STAMPING & WELDING CO. Nov. 23, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961; Nov. 9, 1962], No. 44498/62. Heading F4T. In a system comprising a plurality of burners heating a furnace, a water heater or an incinerator, the fuel oil is maintained at levels just lower than the nozzles of the burners by valves in oil containers C, Fig. 1 (not shown), and air supplied to the burners aspirates the oil from the nozzles. The oil is delivered to the containers C from a supply tank by a pump and surplus oil is returned from the containers C to the supply tank. If the burner nozzles are all at the same level a single container C suffices. The air is supplied by a compressor disposed within the housing of the oil pump and connected to a manifold from which pipes run to the burners. A regulating valve R is located between the compressor and the manifold and a spring-loaded valve is located in a return pipe connecting the manifold to the inlet of the compressor. A solenoid valve S in each air pipe to the burners is operated by a flame sensor FS at the burner. The air supplies are further controlled by a furnace thermostat, an aquastat in the hot water heater and a timer in the incinerator so that the burners thereof are individually controlled. Each burner, Fig. 2, comprises a nozzle 5 supplied with oil by a pipe 7 and with air by a pipe 6 and discharging an oil/air mixture through a central hole in a metal screen 26 into a perforated cylindrical flame guide 12 enclosed in a combustion chamber 17. Spark ignition electrodes 8 are mounted in a recess 19 in a porcelain ring 9 and the spark is blown into the mixture by a current of air passing through an inlet 23 in the ring. A cap 10 is mounted on the porcelain ring 9 and air is delivered to the space within the cap by a conduit 11. Part of this air passes through openings 13, 14 into the flame guide 12 and part through openings 16 in the porcelain ring 9 into the combustion chamber. The burning mixture circulates through the forward apertures in the flame guide into the annular space between the combustion chamber 17 and the flame guide and returns through the rear apertures of the flame guide. The mixture is partially burned in the flame guide and passes through a Venturi 27 to a second burner comprising a flame deflector 29 and screens 28<SP>1</SP>, 30 defining a chamber 28.
