Materials, special; tanks and bunkers. - Reinforced - concrete ocean-going ships propelled by steam power or by gas or oil fuel &c. are built up with double bottoms and sides a. b with the interspaces subdivided and used, wholly or in part, as ballast or trimming tanks or as water, fuel, or oil tanks. The inner and outer skins a, b, keelsons g, intercostal keelsons h, floors, side stringers e, decks, bulkheads, hatch coamings l, and other parts may all form a monolithic homogeneous structure. The main reinforcement is in the form of long steel rods laid both longitudinally and laterally, or of expanded metal or metal meshwork. After the formation of the outer skin and keelsons &c., a permanent centering is stretched and secured over and between the members already formed, and the reinforcement for the inner skin is laid after sufficient concrete has been laid on the permanent centering, after which the concreting of the inner skin is completed.
