Abstract

1,028,535. Bookbinding machines. GENERAL BINDING CORPORATION. March 12, 1964, No. 10543/64. Heading B6A. Apparatus for binding a stack of sheets having perforations adjacent one edge comprises a guide shoot for guiding the perforated edge of said stack into a binding position in abutment with stop plates, a ribbon feeding arrangement for feeding heat sealable ribbons along guides on one side of the guide shoot, each guide being arranged to direct one ribbon into a perforation in the stack, a set of secondary ribbon guides on the opposite side of the guide shoot which are movable into the perforations to guide the ribbons therethrough, means for holding the ribbons taut after withdrawing the secondary guides from the perforations, cutters for severing the taut ribbons, and means for sealing the ends of each ribbon together in a closed loop. The stack of sheets is inserted into a guide shoot 19 with its perforated edge lowermost. Said edge rests on two spaced stop plates 32 and a central stop plate 33, Fig. 7 (not shown). The stop plates contain microswitches to control the operation of the apparatus. Heat sealable ribbons are fed through the perforations in the stack by co-operating rollers 74, 75. The ribbons are guided through the perforations by stationary guide plates 35, 67 and by pairs of cooperating fingers 97. The latter are carried by a bar 99 which is moved at the commencement of a cycle so that the fingers extend through the perforations. After the correct lengths of ribbons have been fed, the fingers 97 are retracted from the perforations. At the same time, a secondary guide shoot 23 is lowered to hold the ribbons taut against the edge of the stack. Spaced knives 73 are reciprocated to sever the ribbons. Further downward movement of the guide shoot 23 folds the ends of the ribbons downwardly about the perforated edge of the stack. Heated jaws 139 are closed together to seal the ends of each ribbon together in the form of a closed loop.
