Abstract

1,027,923. Making cotters. THOMPSON RAMO WOOLDRIDGE Inc. Aug. 19, 1964 [Dec. 26, 1963; Jan. 6, 1964], No. 33911/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division F2] The stem 15, Fig. 2, of an engine poppet valve has a lock groove 16 with a chamfered lower wall 16b, a tubular spring retainer 17 being connected thereto by a one-piece resilient lock. The lock is made from a metal sheet 26 (Fig. 3, not shown) having opposed base portions 29, 30 with parallel faces 27, 28, two angled top surfaces 31, 32 which merge into a bridge 35 via radii 33, 34; the underside of the bridge 35 is joined to the faces 27, 28 by ribs 36, 37. The sheet then has transverse slots punched therein after which it is crimped to form arcuate sections 49 (Fig. 7, not shown) joined by flat parts 50 beyond the slots 47. The sheet is severed along either side of the bridge to provide sheets 51, 52 which are cut to length and formed round a bending shoe into a lock, which, when the ends are joined, incorporates three to six longitudinal slots; the severing operation may take place during or after the bending operation. The locks may be formed from a metal sheet having the sectional shape of one lock only.
