Abstract

1,027,921. Web coating apparatus. MEAD CORPORATION. July 31, 1964, No. 30309/64. Heading D1L. A paper coating device, comprising a doctor 13 mounted so that over edge thereof contacts a paper web 10 on the surface of a continuously rotatable web-carrying roll 11 to form an angular bight adapted to maintain a pool 12 of liquid coating composition in contact with the paper web immediately in advance of its passage under the doctor, has a suppressor bar 16 positioned longitudinally of and submerged in said pool in spaced relation to the boundary thereof and supported by rod means 17 at each end, whereby turbulence in the pool is suppressed by fluid friction forces associated with the suppressor bar. The rods 17 are adjustable longitudinally in clamps 11 which in turn are adjustable on the coating head 15 such that the bar 16 can be adjusted in position in the pool 12. The bar 16 is preferably hollow and can be used for heating or cooling the coating liquid by passing hot or cold fluid therethrough. For this purpose the rods 17 are also made hollow and fluid is fed into and out of rod 16 via rods 17. The rod 16 can alternatively be solid and can be circular, oblong, elliptical or pear shape in cross section.
