Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formula <FORM:1027746/C2/1> wherein R1 is an a or b -hydroxy group and R2 is a hydrogen atom or R1 and R2 together represent an oxygen atom, R3 is a C2- 6 alkyl group, a phenyl (C1- 6 alkyl) group or a C3- 8 cycloalkyl group, and R4 is a hydrogen atom, a C1- 6 alkyl group or a phenyl (C1- 6 alkyl) group, or the group -NR3R4 forms a 5-, 6- or 7-membered heterocyclic ring which may contain an oxygen or additional nitrogen hetero-atom, which latter may be substituted by a C1- 6 alkyl group or a group-COR where R is a C1- 6 alkyl or alkoxy group, and T1, T2 and T3 are hydrogen atoms or T1 and T2 or T2 and T3 form a bond, the remaining T symbols representing a hydrogen atom, acid addition salts and, wherein R4 is other than hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl quaternary ammonium salts thereof, and their preparation by reductive amination of a compound of formula <FORM:1027746/C2/2> wherein R11 is an a - or b -hydroxy group and R21 is a hydrogen atom, followed if desired by (a) oxidation to a 3-keto group, (b) catalytic hydrogenation of a D 4 or D 5 double bond, or (c) interconversion of the 17-amino group by known methods, for example alkylation or aralkylation. The compounds of the invention have central nervous system stimulant activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier, for example in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration, such as tablets, pills, granules, dispersible powders, syrups, elixirs, solutions, suspensions and ampoules.
