Abstract
A thermosetting moulding powder comprises a fibrous material, a urea-formaldehyde resin, and 0.1 to 10% by weight of resin plus fibre of a salt of sulphamic acid and a metal from Group II of the Periodic Table (except Ra and Hg) or Al, Pb or Ni, or an organic amine. Preferred are the Group II metals and triethanolamine and aniline. The fibrous filler may be e.g. a -cellulose, wood flour, paper pulp, sulphite pulp, ground wood, asbestos, cotton rag and glass fibres. The sulphamate may be added to the mixture of resin and fibre before drying, or at the milling stage. In examples, a 1 : 1.3 urea-formaldehyde resin solution is mixed with cellulose, dried, and ground, then made into a series of ball mill charges containing also ZnO, zinc stearate, lithopone and ultra-blue pigment. These are milled (a) unchanged, (b) with hexamine stabilizer added, (c) with a sulphamate added, or (d) with hexamine and sulphamate added, and compression moulded into small beakers. The sulphamates used were those of triethanolamine, aniline, Ba, Al, Pb, Ni, Zn, Mg and Ca. Uses.-Kitchen and domestic utensils, electric light fittings, buttons, toys.
