Abstract

Moulding compositions possessing high translucency and good mechanical properties are produced from aminoplastic resins derived from formaldehyde and urea, thiourea, melamine, dicyandiamide or related compounds, and a cellulosic filler which has been subjected to alkali swelling. The cellulose used may be fibre, pulpboard, paper, yarn or fabrics and for optimum purity of colour and translucency of the product should be bleached and highly purified before swelling. The alkali preferred for the swelling treatment is aqueous sodium hydroxide of 6-25 per cent strength used at a temperature of - 10 to +30 DEG C. Other cellulose swelling agents, e.g. zinc chloride, and/or wettingagents and alcohols may be added in small amounts, if desired. The treated cellulose is freed of alkali by suction, filtration or centrifuging, followed by washing with water or alternate changes of dilute acid and water, dried and impregnated or compounded with the aminoplastic resin. A suitable composition contains 85-65 per cent by weight of aminoplast and 15-35 per cent by weight of treated cellulose. The resin impregnated pulp is then ground with hexamine base and either hexamine thiocyanate or methyl phosphate as curing agents. Specification 649,740 is referred to.
