Abstract
1,027,536. Inserting leaflets in cartons. BIVANS CORPORATION. March 3, 1964 [March 8, 1963], No. 8870/64. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B6] An apparatus for inserting leaflets into cartons or the like moving at uniform speed comprises a gapped support on which each leaflet is placed, a ram then thrusting the leaflet through the gap into a carton beneath. The apparatus may receive cartons from a machine for setting them up from the collapsed tubular form. Collapsed boxes 2 are set up at station S1, their bottom flaps tucked in and they are placed upright and introduced into the pockets of a conveyer. The conveyer pocket members 16, 17 are adjustable for different carton sizes by means including a sprocket 11. The conveyer runs beneath the gapped bridge or support 30, Fig. 2, at station S4, Fig. 1, which comprises two relatively adjustable plates 36, 37 on a carriage 102. The carriage is reciprocated so as to move with the cartons during its forward travel and it carries the ram 70 mounted for vertical sliding along a rod 50 secured to the carriage. Leaflets 31 are fed from a magazine 32 by a suction cup 12, Figs. 2, 10. The cup is carried on an arm 115 mounted on a lever 76 pivoted to a further lever 80, the lever 76 being connected by a link 82 at one end and to a fixed pivot 83. The lever 80 is oscillated by cam means and a bell crank 58, Figs. 10, 11, 15 and the arrangement is such that the cup is given a thrusting movement in the direction of the length of the leaflet stack, Fig. 10, to facilitate release of the lowermost leaflet from a stop 59. The cup is moved to the position of Fig. 11 to deposit the leaflet on the bridge. The ram 70 then descends to thrust it into the carton, folding it to U-form in the process. The bell crank 58 has a projection 92 which engages a vacuum release element 43, Fig. 15, when the leaflet is deposited. A feeler 103 is engaged by boxes on the conveyer to act on the element 43 through a lever 117 and universal drive 116. Should no box be present, the cup 12 is connected to atmosphere and no leaflet is fed. The cam controlling the ram is adjustable relative to the conveyer drive so that a leaflet may be placed in a selected portion of the container, e.g. a compartment. A closure flap printing device 54 (not detailed) operates on the cartons after filling at 28, Fig. 1.
