Abstract
102,729. Cameron, J. L., and Yaggi, L. E. Dec. 10, 1915, [Convention date]. Sights. -Relates to detachable tubular periscope sights and consists (1) in a resilient mount for the sight having means for ad. justing for range and deflection, and (2) in a special construction of the end pieces of the periscope and of the mounting for the reflectors. The periscope sight comprises a vertical tube d, Figs. 1, 2, 6, which may be telescopic, provided at each end with hollow blocks m, m<1> carrying short horizontal tubes c, e. The mirrors or prisms are mounted in the blocks m, m<1> in such a way that one or both are adjustable. Preferably the top one is fixed and the bottom one adjustable. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, both the mirrors o are adjustably mounted between springs q and screws r screwing through cover plates n on the blocks m, m<1>. The tube d is resiliently and adjustably mounted so as to yield under the shock of discharge by two supports s, u on a plate z, which is secured to a plate b on the gun by a wedged dovetail. The upper support s is mounted to swivel and the lower support has screw and spring means for moving the tube backwards and forwards to adjust for drift. This lower support comprises a ring u mounted in a block A which is adapted to slide on a frame B fixed to the plate z. The ring u which is clamped to periscope tube d by set screws, is adapted to be rotated by a screw L, Fig. 6, acting on a lug on the ring in opposition to a spring-plunger N. The block A is adjusted, longitudinally of the gun, by a screw D acting in conjunction with a spring plunger E. The spring plungers N, E prevent strain by yielding under the shock of discharge. The tube d contains one or more sets of crosswires. Lenses may also be combined with the prisms or mirrors.
