A traction mechanism comprises a pair of driving wheels 1 gripping opposite sides of a rail or traction element 2 and each mounted on a floating lever pivoted at each end at 12 to an arm 6 of a bell-crank 5 which is pivoted at its vertex 56 to a yoke straddling rail 2 and at the end of its other arm to a resilient link 8 connected to a locomotive or other frame. In operation leading web 72 of each lever engages one of the bell-cranks and due to the action of the trailing bell-cranks the radial force of the wheels on the rail is proportional to the tractive load. The pivots 12 are adjustable for wear in the wheel tyres 27 and rail 2 by means of bolts 59 in the levers and each wheel is driven from an electric motor mounted on the lever or frame through shafts 54, 32, pinion 31 and gearwheel 29 mounted on the wheel. A hydraulic drum brake is mounted on shaft 32.
