Abstract

327,815. General Electric Co., Ltd., and Robson, R. Feb. 18, 1929. Skid brakes applied by running axle or wheel.-A track brake for vehicles which is adapted to clamp the vehicle to the track is applied by a clutch device driven by an axle or wheel of the vehicle. As applied to the bogie of a tower crane, the apparatus comprises a rail-engaging shoe 30 carried by a pair of links 12 pivoted to the bogie frame at 11 so as to move parallel to the rail. The shoe has a rectangular opening 34 through which passes a shaft 35 of triangular section arranged to rock on bearings on the frame members 10. The shaft 35 is secured to a liner 38 counterweighted at 39 and having pivoted thereto a rack 40 adapted for engagement with a pinion 41 driven through a friction clutch from the running wheel 8 of the bogie. The clutch comprises a pair of discs carried by the wheel 8 and between which is gripped by springs a third disc carried by the pinion 41. The pinion is freely mounted on an extension of the bush of the wheel 8, which may alsd carry a driving pinion. The rack 40 can be thrown into and out of engagement with the pinion 41 by means of a toggle 42, 43 connected to a fixed point 45, a link 46 and an operating rod 44. The link 46 carries a die working in a slot 49 in the rack 40. The rod 44 may be actuated by a solenoid arranged to be energized and de-energized respectively when current is cut off from and supplied to the travelling motor of the crane. Thus if it is desired to stop the crane, lowering of the rod 44 engages the rack 40 with the pinion 41, thereby rocking the lever 38 and shaft 35 in one direction or the other depending upon the rotational direction of the wheels, the shoe 30 being forced into engagement with the under surface of the rail flange 32 in either case.
