Abstract

A process for the production of a rigid polyurethane foam free from burnout comprises reacting together a polyol and an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of a blowing agent and of an organic phosphorus-containing compound, the proportions and nature of the polyol, polyisocyanate and blowing agent and the conditions of the reaction being such that, in the absence of the phosphorus-containing compound, burnout would occur, and the amount of phosphorus-containing compound being sufficient to prevent burnout but insufficient to confer self-extinguishing properties on the resulting rigid foam. The phosphorus-containing compound can contain hydroxyl groups which react with the polyisocyanate. Suitable non-reactive phosphorus-containing compounds are triethyl phosphate, tripropyl phosphate and dimethyl ethyl phosphate. Generally, the phosphorus-containing compound is used in a quantity of from 1.25 to 3% by weight of the combined weight of polyol and organic polyisocyanate. Polyisocyanates and polyols are those generally used in polyurethane foam formation.
