Abstract

A process for the preparation of a polyurethane foam by the "one shot method" comprises reacting an organic polyisocyanate or an organic polyisothiocyanate with a polyol having a hydroxyl number between 60 and 168 mg. KOH/g. prepared by reacting a 1,2-alkylene oxide which contains in its structure at least three carbon atoms with a nucleating agent under adduct forming conditions in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to give an intermediate product and then reacting the intermediate product under adduct forming conditions in the presence of an alkaline catalyst with a 1,2-alkylene oxide which contains in its structure at least one carbon atom more than the number of carbon atoms in the structure of the 1,2-alkylene oxide used to prepare the intermediate product. The nucleating agent is defined as an organic polyfunctional compound containing at least two active hydrogen atoms, those preferred being polyhydric alcohols, but polyhydric phenols and polyamines may also be used. In Examples 1 and 2 the polyol is prepared by reacting glycerol with propylene oxide to give an intermediate adduct which is reacted with a mixture of butene oxides containing mainly 1-butene oxide. Potassium is used as the alkaline catalyst. The 1,2-alkylene oxide that is reacted with the intermediate adduct preferably contains not more than eight carbon atoms. Water is used as the blowing agent and the preferred polyisocyanate is an 80:20% by weight mixture of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate and 2,6-toluene diisocyanate.
