Abstract

1466712 Hydrophilic polyurethane foams MONTEDISON SpA 30 May 1974 [30 May 1973] 23987/74 Heading C3R An open-cell, semi-rigid hydrophilic polyurethane foam, generally having a density of 12-100 kg./cu.m., is prepared by reacting 50- 90 p.b.w. of one or more trifunctional polyols having a M.W. of from 500-3000; 10-50 p.b.w. of one or more trifunctional aminopolyols having a M.Wt. less than 500; 1-5 p.b.w. of water; and 0À1-2 p.b.w. of one or more silicone surfactants with one or more organic isocyanates in an amount such as to provide from 40-80% of the number of equivalents of isocyanate groups necessary to react with all the active hydrogen atoms of the polyols and water, generally in the presence of an amine catalyst. The reaction mixture may additionally comprise up to 10 p.b.w. of a polyol of functionality 2-6 and M.Wt. up to 1000, and up to 50 p.b.w. of a halogenated hydrocarbon expanding agent. Suitable aminopolyols are C 2 -C 4 trialkanolamines. Suitable trifunctional polyols are prepared from glycerol and/or trimethylol propane and/or triethanolamine and ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide. Suitable isocyanates are 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate, 4,4 - diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polyphenylpolymethylene polyisocyanates. In the examples foams are prepared by reacting a mixture consisting of a glycerol/propylene oxide polyol of M.Wt. 1000, triethanolamine, water, silicone surfactants, triethylamine, and either CFCl 3 or a sorbitol/propylene oxide polyol of M.Wt. 700, with polyphenyl-polymethylenepolyisocyanate of NCO index 76 or 50. Uses.-Substrates for plants.
