Abstract

1382538 Polyurethane foams BAYER AG .15 June 1973 [27 June 1972] 28590/73 Heading C3R An open-celled polyurethane foam which can be irreversibly compressed in the absence of water and which, when compressed, will swell up to its original volume in the presence of water, is obtained by reacting (a) a polyhydroxyl compound having a hydroxyl number of from 600 to 1,900 with (b) a polyisocyanate having aliphatically bound isocyanate groups and which contains urethane and/or urea and/or carbodiimide and/or allophanate and/or isocyanurate and/or biuret groups and with (c) water. Instead of the above polyhydroxy compound there may be used a mixture of compounds having an average hydroxyl number of from 600 to 1,900; such a mixture may include polyhydroxyl compounds with hydroxyl numbers between 30 and 600 provided the average hydroxyl number of the mixture is from 600 to 1,900. In examples, irreversibly compressible foams which recover their original volumes when contacted with water, are obtained by reacting a polyisocyanate containing biuret groups derived from hexamethylene diisocyanate, with water and with ethylene glycol, starch, glycerol and 1,1,1 -trimethylolpropane; the reaction mixtures also contain tin octoate as an activator, a polysiloxane as a stabilizer and monofluorotrichloromethane as a blowing agent. Uses.-Substrates for the cultivation and growth of plants and swabs for surgical and medical purposes.
