Abstract
A process of preparing polyurethanes comprises reacting a polyol with an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of catalyst comprising a secondary imidazole. In the production of polyurethane foam products the polyol has terminal hydroxy groups and the secondary imidazole is a 2-alkyl imidazole free from substituents in the 1 and 3 positions, the alkyl group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms, and the reaction product is formed into a foam by the action of a blowing agent. The polyol may be an hydroxy polyester being the reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol with a polycarboxylic acid, or an hydroxy polyether being the reaction product of a polyhydric alcohol with a polyhydric alcohol containing only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. The catalyst can also include a tertiary amine, in particular diaza-bicyclo-octane. There may further be present an organometallic catalyst such as dibutyltin dilaurate. 2-Methyl, 2-ethyl and 2,4-dimethyl imidazoles are specified catalysts. Blowing can be produced by the presence of water and/or a volatile haloalkane in the reaction mixture. In examples foams are prepared with 2-methyl imidazole as catalyst from polypropylene glycol mixed with a glycerine polypropoxide triol and also from a polyester. Polyesters from dimer acids and from polyhydric ether-alcohols can also be used.ALSO:A process of preparing polyurethanes comprises reacting a polyol with an organic polyisocyanate in the presence of catalyst comprising a secondary imidazole.
