Abstract

A method of making a skeletal cellular polyurethane plastic comprises reacting an organic polyisocyanate with castor oil in the presence of a blowing agent, an alkyl silane oxyalkylene block copolymer and from 4.5 to 40 per hundred parts by weight of castor oil of an organic compound which contains only one free hydroxyl group as the sole active hydrogen-containing group. The term "hydroxyl group" is used here to refer to both alcoholic hydroxyl groups and to the group -OH present in the radical -COOH. In such hydroxyl compounds R-OH the group R may be substituted with halogen, nitro, alkoxy, phosphato (free from active hydrogen) groups. As examples are specified alcohols containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms and also included are benzyl alcohol, b -hydroxy-ethyl benzene, diethylene glycol ethyl ether, 2-chloroamyl alcohol and 2-chloro-hexyl-alcohol. Specified as monocarboxylic acids are aliphatic acids containing 2 to 18 carbon atoms and also benzoic, o-chlorobenzoic and m-toluic acid. Particularly preferred is a mixture of acids and non-acid bodies comprising tall oil. Suitable block copolymers are those disclosed in Specification 804,369. Catalysts for the reaction are tertiary amines, e.g. triethylene diamine, N-methyl or ethyl morpholine, diethylethanolamine, 1-methyl-4-dimethyl-aminoethyl piperazine, 3-methoxy-N-dimethyl propylamine, N-dimethyl-N-methyl isopropyl propylene diamine, N,N-diethyl 3-diethylamino propylamine, tin compounds and the organo-metallic compounds disclosed in Specification 930,635 and in U.S.A. Specification 2,846,408. As blowing agents are specified water, halohydrocarbons, N,N1-dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine, diazoaminobenzene, 1,3-diphenyl triazine, azodicarbonamide, 1,11-azobisformamide, 2,21-azoisobutyronitrile and azo-hexahydrobenzonitrile. In Example (1) foams are obtained by reacting mixtures of (1) castor oil, tall oil, 2,4- and 2,6-toluylene diisocyanates, water, triethylene diamine, block copolymer, N-ethyl morpholine and stannous octoate. In other examples the castor oil is mixed with (5) a mixture of heptadecyl, octadecyl and isooctyl alcohols; (6) heptadecyl alcohol; (7) lauric acid; (8) oleic acid; (9) acetic acid.
