Abstract

1381571 Polyurethane foams BAYER AG 4 May 1973 [4 May 1972 3 July 1972] 21268/73 Heading C3R Flame-resistant, open-celled polyurethane foams are prepared by reacting a polyether, a polyisocyanate, water and/or an organic blowing agent in the presence of a silicon compound which is a siloxane of the general formula wherein R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP> represents an aromatic radical and a is 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, at least 70% by weight of the siloxane mixture consisting of siloxanes in which a = 1, while siloxanes in which a=0, a=2 and a=3 are present in the mixture in proportions of not more than 25%, 20% and 5% by weight respectively. The polyether is suitably one in which at least 10% of the hydroxyl groups are primary hydroxyl groups. Preferred polyisocyanates are solutions of a polyisocyanate containing biuret, allophanate, urethane or isocyanurate groups in a polyisocyanate which is free from such groups. In examples siloxanes are used in which R is methyl and R<SP>1</SP> is phenyl and having the following compositions (i) 83À5% a=1; 14À5% a=2; 2À0% a=3, (ii) 15À0% a=0, 71À0% a=1; 12À3% a=2; 1À7% a=3 and (iii) 25À0% a=0; 74À0% a=1; 1À0% a=2. The foams may be used in upholstery applications.
