Abstract

Carbonyl sulphide contained in gas mixtures obtained, e.g. from oil gasification processes, is hydrolysed to hydrogen sulphide at a temperature in the range of 100-120 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a basic magnesium carbonate in which the molar ratio MgO : CO2 is from 1 :0.65 to 1 :0.80. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier.ALSO:Carbonyl sulphide contained in gas mixtures is hydrolysed to hydrogen sulphide at a temperature in the range 100-120 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst comprising a basic magnesium carbonate in which the molar ratio MgO : CO2 is from 1 : 0.65 to 1 : 0.80. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier and may contain 10-20% wt. of the basic carbonate. The basic carbonate may be prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of a magnesium salt with a carbonate at 20-90 DEG C., drying at 100-120 DEG C., and then if desired heating for 5-15 hours at 130-160 DEG C.
