Abstract
1,026,282. Cold separation of gas mixtures. WERKSPOOR N.V. July 11, 1963 [July 11, 1962], No. 27527/63. Heading F4P. In a process for separating a gas mixture, e.g. air, into at least two components, e.g. oxygen and nitrogen, by rectification in a column 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), supplied with cold by at least one cold gas refrigerator 2, 3 of reversed hot gas engine type and wherein the separated components are withdrawn from the column in the gaseous phase and a portion of each is passed through a heat exchanger 5 having an incoming feed air passage 6 means is provided whereby at least one of the separated components is withdrawn in both the gaseous and liquid phase. A portion of the feed air is passed through an optional conventional refrigerator 27, a coil 20 immersed in a chamber 11 containing liquid nitrogen resulting from condensation in the cold gas refrigerator 13 of that portion of nitrogen gas leaving the head of column 1 and not traversing the exchanger 5. Product liquid nitrogen is withdrawn through a duct 14, product gaseous nitrogen through a duct 9 and product gaseous oxygen through a duet 17. Oxygen in the liquid phase is obtained by withdrawing a portion of the oxygen gas from a point 33, Fig. 5 (not shown), on the upstream end of exchanger 5 and condensing it in a chamber 36 cooled by liquid nitrogen in adjacent chamber 11 and from which product liquid oxygen is withdrawn through a duct 38. A portion of condensed nitrogen may be withdrawn from chamber 11, Fig. 6 (not shown), through a duct 31 leading to the head of column 1 and the cold gas refrigerator 2 is dispensed with. In a modification, the exchanger 5 and chamber 11 are duplicated; switching valves being provided. In all constructions division of incoming feed air is effected by a valve 18 controlled by a temperature-sensitive element 26 within the exchanger 5. Flow of effluent nitrogen and oxygen issuing from the column is maintained constant by devices 23, 24.
