Abstract
1,026,205. Combustion chambers operating under pressure. ERDOLCHEMIE G.m.b.H. Oct. 7, 1963 [Oct. 9, 1962], No. 39430/63. Heading F1L. An apparatus for the catalytic combustion of continuous streams of waste gas which contains hydrocarbons comprises a combustion chamber with a waste gas inlet and a combustion gas outlet, the chamber containing a catalyst bed distributed over the flow cross-section thereof. The combustion chamber is in the form of a steel pressure casing and is provided with an internal, elastic insulation which is resistant to high temperature and prevents loss of heat from the chamber. The combustion chamber is enclosed in spaced relation by a protective jacket which sustains the absolute pressure of the system, the waste gas to be burned flowing through the annular space so formed so as to cool the pressure casing and outer protective jacket. The pressure casing has only to withstand the difference in pressure between that in the annular space and that in the combustion chamber. In Fig. 1 the combustion space 1 is defined by a steel pressure casing 2 which has an internal lining 3 of elastic insulation and contains a catalyst bed 4. A protective jacket 5 is disposed around the pressure casing 2 and defines therewith an annular space 6, the jacket 5 having an external layer of insulation 7. Waste gas containing hydrocarbons is supplied through inlets 8, 9 into the space 6 and thence flows into the combustion space 1 through the opening in the pressure casing 2. The waste gas is ignited as it flows through the catalyst bed and the combustion gases discharge through the outlet 12. In a second embodiment, the waste gas after flowing through the annular space 6 passes to an external intermediate heater before passing into the combustion space 1.
