A shaft oil seal comprises a rubber &c. ring 14 rotatable with the shaft 10 and having a flange 16 in contact with a surface 17 perpendicular to the shaft axis and a shield member of oil resistant material, e.g. plastics or metal, which is secured to the shaft and acts to deflect oil away from the ring. The shield is attached to the ring to form a unit therewith and the ring may be reinforced by a finger type spring washer.
