Abstract
1,025,849. Chucks. A. E. SYKES. March 15, 1965 [March 17, 1964], No. 11115/64. Heading B3B. A work-holder comprises a number of internal or external work-engaging members 3 on a ring 2 which can be distorted by thrust units to release a work-piece. The jaws 3 are serrated for adjustment on carriers 4 clamped to the ring 2 and to the chuck body 1. The ring is distorted by applying fluid pressure to pads 12 by means of threaded pistons 15 one or more of which can be operated. The chuck is mounted by a collar 16 integral with the ring 2. A chuck for external gripping comprises an internal distortable ring 22, Fig. 3 (not shown), engaged by pads 26. The functions of the two chucks can be transposed by positioning the pads between the jaw positions and not in alignment therewith. The pressure may be applied automatically by a piston 31, Fig. 4 (not shown), engaging a piston 30 to move gearlike jaws 29 to grip a gear-shaped workpiece. Alternatively, pressure may be applied mechanically or by piston-and-cylinder assemblies.
