Abstract

[Also in Divisions E1 and E2] A structure formed from stiff sheets 10 (Fig. 1) is joined together edge to edge by a clamp comprising a channel member 11 with spaced side walls 12 the inner faces 15 of which converge from the bottom 13, to accommodate the edges between them, and between which a clamping bar 19 is to be disposed, having a slot 10 formed by limbs 17, and a wedge-shaped part 21 extending up from the channel bottom 3 into the slot 18, to that by forcing the bar 19 and the part 21 the limbs 17 are forced outward to clamp the said edges between them and the faces 15. The part 21 may be separate from the member 11 and the top 22 of it may have parallel sides. The sheets 10 are each shaped to extend over a face 15, across an outer edge 16 and over an outer face of a wall 12, the bar 19 having a head to overlie the edges 16 and flanks 20 opposite the said outer faces and which when the bar 19 and part 21 are forced together clamp the sheeting 10 between them and the said outer faces. The member 11, the part 21 and the bar 19 may be extruded or rolled metal, or synthetic plastics material. With aluminium sheeting the member 11, the part 21 and the bar 19 are of aluminium alloy, the alloy for the member 11 and the bar 19 being more rigid than for the part 21, the metal for which may be aluminium and not aluminium alloy. The sheeting may be metal or synthetic plastics material as well as the clamp parts. A roof or wall may be formed from sheets 10 joined by the clamp, the member 11 of which is inset in a channel in a structural member having internal side walls in which the member 11 is a sliding fit.
