An elevator control system is arranged to work in two modes according to the service demand. As described, two groups of three cars each selecting a first-starting car at the main floor; the service demand is estimated by counting the number of calls or car trips in the entire plant and determining whether the total exceeds a specified number; when the demand is light the first-start-holding-contactors 41, 42 are interlocked so that only one group (the group having a car scheduled to start next) responds to calls; with normal demand a relay 2 is energized to parallel the first-start-holding-contactors, and the groups respond alternately to calls (alternate response by interlocked contactors 61, 62).
