Abstract

1,025,765. Centreless grinders. G. R. WHITTENBERG. Feb. 18, 1963, No. 6437/63. Heading B3D. A fixture for use with a centreless grinding machine for supporting a long workpiece W as it enters or leaves the machine, comprises a tube 28 secured by pins 29 to floating plates 22 loosely supported on plates 21 on the tops of rods 20. Each rod is vertically adjustable, by a screw 24 in a cylinder 12 forming part of a standard 11; a slit 16 in the cylinder is closed by a bolt 19 for clamping the rod 20. A plate 30 welded to the end of tube 28 is bolted to a mounting pad 32 bolted to the feed fixture of the machine. Mounted on the tube 28 are identical bracket assemblies having rollers supporting the workpiece. Each assembly includes a slit reaction plate 35 secured on the tube 28 by a locking screw 38. A split sleeve 39 is located on the tube 28 adjacent one side of the plate 35 and can be secured in adjusted position by a bolt 42. Downwardly extending part 45 of the sleeve 39 has a groove 46 engaged by the end of an adjusting screw 47 threaded through a boss 48 secured to the plate 35. A split sleeve 51 is located on the tube 28 adjacent the other side of the plate 35 and can be secured in adjusted position by a bolt 54. Downwardly extending part 57 of the sleeve 51 threadedly receives an adjusting screw 59 the end of which engages a groove 61 in a block 62 fastened to the plate 35. The sleeves 39, 51 have upwardly extending parts 43, 55 each having an off-centre elongated groove into which open elongated slots 63 to receive bolts 66 for fastening a mounting bracket 65 having a key 65<SP>1</SP> slidably fitted in the groove. The outer surface of the bracket 65 is tapered, e.g. by 4 degrees, and the bracket is bored at right angles to the surface to receive a bolt 67, the end 78 of which is of reduced diameter and threaded. A steel roller 68 is mounted by roller bearing 73 on the bolt 67. A nut 76, having an open end sleeve 77, is secured on the end 78 of the bolt 67. A rubber roller 79 may be used, the sleeve nut 76 being reversed so that the sleeve 77 forms an extension of the bearing surface of the bolt 67.
