Abstract

800,908. Work supports for centreless grinding machines. WHITTENBERG, G. R. Jan 29, 1957 [Jan 30, 1956], No. 3102/57. Class 60. Work-supporting means for centreless grinding machines comprises a tubular member or or axially aligned tubular members disposed horizontally, a plurality of standards for support thereof, a plurality of V-shaped brackets mounted on the tubular member or members in a spaced relation to each other, each of the brackets including two short sleeves or collars mounted end -to-end relation to each other, an arm extending substantially radially from each of the sleeves, the arms being disposed in a V-shaped formation with respect to each other, a block longitudinally slidable on each of the arms, each of the blocks carrying a roller, the rollers on both arms of each bracket being adapted to support a work piece within the gap between the two arms, and means for adjusting the position of each block on the respective arm, each roller being adapted for rotation in a plane set at a helical angle to the work piece resting thereon. Work-supporting means includes standards 10 each having a tubular vertical stanchion 11 resting on a base composed of two crossed channel-section rails 12 and braced by angle-section props 13. Telescopically fitting into the stanchion 11 from above is a post 17 vertically adjustable by pairs of nuts 24, 25 on a screw 23 which embrace plates 21, 22 on the stanchion 11 and post 17 ; the top portion of the stanchion 11 is split longitudinally at 14, and a clamping bolt 16 passes through ears 15, 15 on the opposed edges of the slit. A platform 18 welded to the upper end of the post 17 supports, in a floating manner, a base plate 26, the upper surface of the platform 18 and the under surface of the plate 26 being ground flat. One plate 26 has welded thereto angle-shaped brackets having vertical members 28 carrying set screws 29 with conical tips engaging recesses 33 in a tube 30. The left-hand standard 10 has angle brackets 35 to which is welded a tube 31 within which is welded one end of a tube 36 the other end of which fits into the interior of the tube 30 for sliding telescopic engagement therewith. The tube 36 is provided throughout its length with a keyway 37 engaged by a key 39 on a short spacer 38 having the same external diameter as the tubes 30, 31. Clamped on the spacer 38 are two work-supporting members set at an angle to each other to form a V-shaped worksupport bracket. One bracket member includes a short sleeve 40 within a slit 41 to the opposed edges of which are secured bars 42, 44, clamping screws 46 passing through smooth bores in bar 44 and engaging threaded bores in bar 42. Projecting radially from the sleeve 40 is an arm 48 carrying an adjustable block 51; the black 51 has a portion 55 engaging a slideway 54 on the arm 48, and the block 51 is secured in adjusted position by bolts 50 passing through elongated slots 49 in the arm 48 and threaded into holes 52 in the block 51. A shaft 57 secured to the block 51 carries a roller 58, the shaft 57 being inclined with respect to the axis of the tube 36. A second roller 58a is mounted on a shaft 57a carried by a block 51a adjustable on an arm 48a projecting from a split sleeve 63 clamped on the spacer 38 in the same way as the sleeve 40. An adjusting screw 66 passes through a threaded aperture 65 in a bar 64 projecting from the arm 48a, the end of the screw bearing against the face 61 of a stub 60 extending radially from the sleeve 40. A second V-shaped bracket is mounted upon the tube 30. The end of the tube 30 contains a short cylindrical insert 71 retained by a radial pin 72 and having an outwardly projecting part filling an aperture 74 in a holding plate 73 and preferably welded thereto ; the holding plate 73 is secured to an end plate 75 provided with a number of holes for application of bolts for connection to the grinding machine of the work-receiving or work-discharging side thereof. In use, the rollers 58, 58a support the workpiece 70, and the rotation imparted to the latter by the grinding machine rotates the rollers 58, 58a which, due to their inclination, impart an axial movement to the workpiece.
