Abstract

Alkali is recovered from a solution containing alkali metal salts of acidic organic compounds and force alkali, such as a spent caustic solution which has been used for treating hydrocarbon fluids particularly to remove sulphur and acidic organic compounds therefrom, by passing the solution through a bed of cation-exchange material in the hydrogen form, e.g. sulphonated coal, until saturated with alkali metal ions, then passing water through the bed and passing an electric current through the water in the bed between electrodes, e.g. formed of graphite or platinum, disposed at each end of the bed, the anode being at the water inlet end. Two or more beds of cation-exchange material may be used alternately or in rotation. A typical spent caustic solution contains free NaOH with sulphide, mercaptan, naphthenate and phenolate present as sodium salts.
