Abstract

Polymaleic anhydride is produced by polymerizing maleic anhydride, dissolved in an inert organic solvent, under the action of a free radical polymerization catalyst. A solution of 10-60% maleic anhydride in benzene and/or chloroform may be used together with up to 50% of the solvent of carbon tetrachloride or acetic anhydride. The catalyst may be a percarbonate, e.g. di-isopropyl or dicyclohexyl, or a peroxide, e.g. dibenzoyl or dilauryl, and may be used in a 2-40% amount or as an at least 1% solution, e.g. in benzene, and may be added continuously during polymerization. Up to 0.1% of iron stearate, cobalt naphthenate or manganese oleate may be added as co-catalysts. The polymerization may be carried out at 40-100 DEG C. and under super-atmospheric pressure.
