Abstract

Copolymers of maleic anhydride and a C2- 4 olefine are prepared by copolymerizing the monomers at a superatmospheric pressure and at a temperature of 50-80 DEG C. in an inert organic solvent and in the presence of a polymerization initiator comprising an organic redox system comprising an organic peroxide and either a sulphinic acid or a chelate compound containing a central atom of variable valency. The olefine may be propylene or isobutylene. The peroxide may be benzoyl, 4,41-tetrachlorobenzoyl, methylethyl-ketone or cyclohexanone peroxides. The sulphinic acid may be p-toluene-sulphinic acid and the chelate compound may be ferrous acetyl-acetonate. The organic solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. benzene, or an aliphatic ether.
