A light alloy ship's accommodation ladder, which can also act as a shore gangway, is pivotably connected at its upper end to a rotatable platform 8 mounted on a trolley 4 which can be moved across the ship on channel-sectioned rails. The ladder, which may have a lower section 15 hinged or, as shown, telescopically fixed to it, is lowered by means of a rope, or ropes, 20 from davits 21 or 21 and 22a, and clamped in position by a lateral bar fixed to the top of a frame 13 fixed to the ladder, which bar passes through a slot 22 in a plate 23 fixed to the guard railing 7, and has a threaded end on to which a butterfly nut is screwed. An L- shaped bar 25 fixed to a frame 26 locates the ship's Jacob's ladder 23a intermediate its spreaders 24. The ladder has fixed handrailing 12, and the ship may have the rails running right across it, with a turn-table therein, or two sets of rails, with a platform on each, the ladder being attachable to either platform; an extra slotted plate 23 is employed on the other side in either case, and further plates 23 may be employed on the far side of each platform, so that the ladder may face in the opposite direction. The ladder is stored, when not in use, on crutches (not shown) arranged parallel to the ship's side, by means of slide rails (not shown) arranged between the guardrailing 7 and said crutches.
