1,024,337. Telescopic shock absorbers. HUGHES TOOL CO. Aug. 24, 1964, No. 34539/64. Heading F2S. A landing-gear telescopic oleo strut for an aircraft comprises a plunger 10 sliding within a cylinder 20, and end wall 12 of the plunger 10 being provided with an opening 14. A floating piston 30 co-operates with the interior of the plunger 10 to separate pressurized gas in a compartment 31 from a liquid filling the cylinder 20 and that part of the interior of the plunger 10 below the piston 30, these liquid filled compartments being connected by the opening 14. In the extended position of the strut a shoulder 13 of the plunger 10 normally abuts a shoulder 23 of the cylinder 20. The floating piston 30 is pre-loaded against the gas pressure by a spring 34 acting between the end wall 12 of the plunger 10 and the floating piston. The floating piston 30 is acted on by the spring 34 only in the initial stages of contraction or in the final stages of extension, the latter to absorb energy from the piston 30 in its return movement so as to minimize the transmission of shock to the aircraft especially if the return movement is caused by rapid unloading of the strut. In the contracted position of the strut the end wall 12 of the plunger abuts the end cap 21 of the cylinder 20 and the floating piston abuts the closure plug 11 of the plunger 10.
