Abstract
1,024,320. Generators operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. Aug. 4, 1964 [Aug. 2, 1963], No. 31086/64. Heading H2A. A magnetohydrodynamic generator has an annular duct which is surrounded by an A.C. excited winding 7 and yoke 9 to produce a longitudinal magnetic field H in the duct. The ionized working fluid is injected at 5 along a helical path to exhaust 6 and interacts with the magnetic field to produce a radial electric field E. The annular duct E has conductive walls 2, 3, 4 comprising water-cooled steel, which short circuit the electric field to give a radial current 1. Due to the Hall effect, this current I produces a circular Hall current which induces a voltage in winding 7 so that the device becomes a selfexcited generator. In a modification, the annular duct can lie inside the exciting winding, thus giving a longer plasma flow path, Fig. 3 (not shown). Three-phase current may be generated by using three single generators, one for each phase.
