Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions comprise (a) a major proportion of a lubricating oil, (b) 1-20 weight per cent of calcium acetate, (c) 0.01-3 weight per cent of a sarcosine derivative of formula R.CO.N(CH3).CH2COOH where R is a C8- 24 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, (d) 0.1-10 weight per cent of an oil-soluble metal sulphonate (petroleum or synthetic), and (e) 0.1-5 weight per cent of the product obtained by reacting one mole of a phosphorus sulphide and four moles of a dicyclic terpene or an essential oil composed predominantly of a dicyclic terpene at a temperature between 100 DEG and 160 DEG C. The oil may be a mineral oil from any of various sources, a hydrocarbon oil derived from coal, an alkylene polymer oil, an alkylene oxide polymer, polypropylene glycol, a diester, a hindered ester, or a phosphorus acid ester, examples being given. Concentrates and mixtures of additives (b)-(e) are also described.
