Abstract

1,023,506. Liquid density measurements. SAUNDERS ROE & NUCLEAR ENTERPRISES Ltd. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept. 19, 1963], No. 36841/63. Heading G1A. In a liquid density measuring instrument the liquid is kept in a chamber 2 at a level which is a function of its density by means of a float 5 which, when it has displaced sufficient weight of liquid, rises and closes, by contacts 6, the liquid inlet valve; a photo-resistor 16, contained in a block of optically transparent rubber together with a light source 14, receives more light as the liquid level rises, thereby giving an indication of the density. The sensitive face of the photo-resistor 16 is shielded from direct light from the light source 14 and that of a compensating photo-resistor 15 is directed towards the light source, resistor 15 being shown behind the source in Fig. 1. The opposed inner faces 17, 18 of the block are silvered so that as the liquid rises light, internally reflected from the other two faces and reflected from the silvered ones, reaches the photo-resistor 16. The photoresistors may be of cadmium sulphide and the light source a self luminous phosphor excited to luminescence by a radio nucleide or a lamp. Additional photo-resistors in the block and additional blocks may be used. The block may also be made to move by being fixed on or geared to the float so dispensing with a liquid level control arrangement, which in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 maintains the level against the outlet flow at 4.
