In a liquid gauging device a self luminous light source, consisting of a glass capsule 3 internally lined with a cadmium sulphide phosphor and filled with a gaseous radionuclide tretium and floatable in a liquid when the weight of the liquid exceeds the capsule weight is associated with at least one light-sensitive cells at a predetermined level so that when the capsule 3 is in proximity with the cells a signal is emitted by the cells to actuate an indicating system or perform a function in accordance with the location of the cells. The cells 5 may be disposed at the ends internally or externally of a restraining cage 4. The device may be used for determining the height or density of a liquid.
