Abstract

102,310. Clavel, R. March 23, 1916. Foam, treatment with.-Foam for treating textiles for degreasing, soaping, mordanting, dyeing, degumming, weighting, &c. is produced by injecting into a suitable solution oxidizing, reducing, or indifferent gases, such as air, oxygen, hydrogen, &c., through finely porous bodies, such as tubes or plates of unglazed earthenware, agglomerated powdered graphite, &c. In degumming silk, the treatment with foam is carried out at 75-95‹ C. By use of air or oxygen, or by addition to the solution of a salt such as sodium perborate, the degumming is hastened. By use of a reducing-gas, such as hydrogen, the operation is prolonged. In weighting silk, a phosphate bath not above 75‹ C., or a silicate bath not above 60‹ C. is used. In degreasing, emulsions containing solvents for fat, such as hydrocarbons, sulphur, or chlorine derivatives of hydrocarbons, carbon bisulphide, chlorides of carbon or alcoholic substances, are used.
