Abstract
In a process and apparatus in which a ladle of metal is placed in a subsequently evacuated vessel, the load on the vacuum pumps is lessened by heating the air initially contained in the vessel. The air may be also partially replaced by water vapour. Heating may be carried out by a gas or oil burner, or by an electric heater; alternatively the exterior wall of the ladle may be heated prior to its positioning in the vacuum vessel.
