Abstract
Graft polymers are made by irradiating a preformed polymer in the presence of a polymerizable vinyl monomer or methyl methacrylate in a solvent which is capable of swelling the polymer to enable the monomer to gain access to active sites on the polymer generated by radiation, the concentration of monomer in solvent being at or near that which gives a grafting maximum for a given dose rate and total dose. Preformed polymers specified are cellulose in the form of paper and pulp, wool, starch, silk polyethylene, polyamides and polyesters. The irradiation may be performed with ultra-violet light or high energy ionizing radiation, e.g. gamma-rays. Grafting monomers specified are styrene, vinyl pyridines and acrylic acid and its amide and nitrile. The examples described using methanol and benzene solutions of styrene (optimum concentration 40%) in grafting on to irradiated paper, wood pulp and wool.
