Abstract

Graft copolymers are made by subjecting polyethylene to a field of high energy ionizing radiation of an intensity of at least 40 X 103 rep per hour for a dose of at least 0,04 megaresp in the absence of oxygen, whereby active centres are formed on the polymer molecule, then contacting within 5 minutes of irradiation at least a portion of the so-formed active centres on the polyethylene with oxygen and thereafter contacting the oxygenerated polymer with a monomer capable of being polymerized by free radicals to form an addition polymer. The monomer may be styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl xylene, isopropyl styrene, chlorostyrene, dichlorostyrene, ethyl vinyl benzene, vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethyl ether, methyl isopropenyl ketone, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, ethyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinyl pyrrolidone or acrylamide.
