Abstract
Graft polymers are made by contacting a polymer containing at least one unsaturated double bond between adjacent carbon atoms, and in dry, solid particulate form, with ozone and then contacting the ozonized polymer with a grafting ethylenically unsaturated monomer capable of being polymerized by free radicals. Suitable base polymers are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, butadiene-styrene copolymers, polystyrene polyhalostyrenes, polyvinyltoluene, polyvinyl naphthalene, polyvinyl cyclohexane, divinyl benzene, polyvinyl indene, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl and allyl siloxanes, polyamides, unsaturated polyesters and unsaturated fatty acid modified glycerol-phthalic acid polyesters. Grafting monomers specified are styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl xylene, divinyl benzene, alphamethyl styrene, chlorostyrene, dichlorostyrene, tert.-butyl styrene, ethylene, butadiene, isoprene, vinyl halides, ethers, esters, ketones and amides, vinylidene chloride, vinyl pyrrolidone, ethyl and butyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. Prior to ozonization the unsaturation of the base polymer may be increased by milling or by exposure to ionizing radiations such as X-rays, gamma rays, neutrons or accelerated electrons. In preferred processes the base polymer is in the form of a film or fibre.
