Abstract

A polymer composition comprises substantially non-cross-linked polyethylene and 0,01 to 20% by weight thereof of a graft copolymer of cross-linked polyethylene and a vinylidene compound, e.g. acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl pyrrolidone and 2-vinyl pyridine. The crosslinking and grafting of the polyethylene are preferably effected by means of high-energy irradiation, e.g. accelerated electrons, pile radiation, and ultra-violet radiation in the presence of a sensitizer such as benzophenone. The irradiation of the polyethylene may be carried out prior to contacting with the grafting monomer, or subsequent thereto. In the latter type of reaction the irradiation may take place in an oxygen atmosphere. The polyethylene to be used for cross-linking and grafting is preferably particulate in form, though it may be used in the form of films or sheets. Alternatively the polyethylene may be cross-linked by chemical means prior to grafting. The blending of the grafted polyethylene with the non-cross-linked polyethylene is performed at a temperature above the melting point of the latter. Both polyethylenes used in making the blends are preferably of the high density type. The resulting polyethylene materials are stated to possess good clarity and dyeability. Specification 904,985 is referred to. p
