Abstract
1,022,332. Temperature responsive actuating elements. N. V. PHILIPS GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 6, 1964 [Aug. 9, 1963], No. 32031/64. Heading G1D. A bimetallic element 2 has a flat portion 5 which is adapted for connection e.g. by means of a bolt to the sole plate of an electric iron, the portion 5 being divided into sections 13, 14, 15, 16 by means of grooves 9, 10, 11, 12 formed in a surface of the portion. The element 2 is bayonet shaped, and when fitted in an electric iron the end of the element 2 remote from the portion 5 actuates switch contacts in the heater circuit of the iron (Fig. 1, not shown). The grooves 9, 10, 11, 12 are made in the surface of the element which becomes concave on heating and preferably cut substantially through one layer of the bimetallic element. The grooves may be radial from a central hole 17 for the fixing bolt or may be concentric, and the effect of these grooves is to prevent flexing of the element in the region of the bolt and thus prevent loosening of its fixture. The element 2 may be provided with a coating to absorb heat and conduct it to the element.
