Abstract
1,022,322. Welding by fusion. FOSTER WHEELER Ltd. May 1, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 18480/61. Heading B3R. An internal arc welding torch, in which a rotatable holder projects from the torch body and carries a transversely projecting electrode, has a plate carrying a pair of pegs which, when the electrode holder is inserted in a hole in a tube plate for making a weld at the far end of the hole, can be engaged in neighbouring holes in the tube plate. The torch holder comprises a conductive tube 20 carrying a plug 18 in which is held by a screw a non- consumable electrode 16, an outer ceramic tube 22 having an aperture 32 for the electrode 16 and an inner cooling water supply tube 30. The plate 26 attached to the body 28 of the torch carries an aligning sleeve 24 surrounding the holder eccentrically and aligning the holder with the axis of a hole 12 in a tube plate 10 when the thickest side of the sleeve 24 is pressed against the side of the hole 12. The torch is clamped in aligned position by expanding pegs 34 in adjacent holes 12 in the tube plate 10 by tightening of conical members 46 by bolts 36 passing through slots 38 in the centring plate 26. The pegs 34 may be located to one side of the holder instead of on opposite sides as shown. A concentric sleeve 24 of diameter slightly less than the holes may be used. Alternatively the pegs 34 may be made a close fit in the holes in the plate 26.
