Abstract

1,022,277. Web coating apparatus. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. April 16,1964 [April 24, 1963], No.15852/64. Heading D1L. Apparatus for applying small particles such as floccules to a moving surface coated with an adhesive layer by means of an electric field comprises a conveyor belt for the floccules, the belt moving over two spaced apart earthed conducting rollers disposed substantially opposite to the moving surface, and means for applying a high voltage to the conveyor belt between the earth rollers to form an electric field between the conveyor belt and the adhesive-layer of the moving surface to effect transfer of the floccules to the adhesive. In the embodiment shown web 1 is taken from a drum 2 and has adhesive applied to it by doctor knife 4 which is at earth potential. The coated web then passes around roller 5 and into the flocculating field 21 between deflecting rollers 13,12, and finally through drying channel 22 to a winding up device. Floccules 6 are applied by brush 8 from an earthed container 7 and through a screen 9 on to endless conveyor belt 19 which carries them into the flocculating field 21. An electric field is formed between the web 1 which is earthed, and belt 19, which is semi-conductive, by contacting the latter with a high voltage source 20 through insulated metal rollers 10, 11. Rollers 14,15,16,17 guiding the belt 19 are kept at earth potential. Any excess of floccules are removed from belt 19 by suction means 18 and the belt 19 may move in the same or contra direction as the web 1 in the flocculating field. Preferably the belt 19 has an electric resistance between 10<SP>8</SP> and 10<SP>11</SP> ohm between the high voltage source and each of the earthed rollers and is preferably formed of a woven belt coated on both surfaces with pigmented polyurethane and the belt is moved at such a speed that the floccules applied to it have no electric contact with each other.
