Abstract
697,738. Pile fabrics. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1951. [Nov. 7, 1950] No. 27200/50. Class 140. In making pile fabrics by adhering loose fibres to an adhesive-coated.travelling web and hardening the adhesive, the fabric 1, withdrawn over guide roll 3 from supply roll 2, after application of a layer, 0.015in. thick, of adhesive from applicator 5 followed by flexible doctor 6, which adhesive is rendered tacky by heating elements 7, is run through two high voltage fields in succession. In the first field, established between condenser plate 12 and earthed wire grid 10, loose fibres 9 are applied to the coated fabric from perforated rotating drum 8, through grid 10, and become orientated by the field, while the path of the fabric therethrough is at an angle greater than 45 degrees to the vertical, preferably horizontal as shown. In the second field, established between earthed condenser plate 15 and plates 18, 19, 20, through which the fabric travels downwardly at an angle greater than 45 degrees to the horizontal, preferably 70-85 degrees thereto as shown, a more even distribution of the fibres is obtained, by causing fibres, which were merely supported by adhering fibres, to adhere. After the second electric field, the pile fabric passes round roll 33 and excess fibres are collected in box 35 while beater 38 assists in this removal, and finally passes through a hardening or vulcanising chamber. Condenser plates 12, 18, 19, 20, may be fed from a magneto, through a fixed spark gap and variable spark gaps 25, 26, 27, 28, to give an alternating voltage, e.g. 10,000- 100,000 at 8-15 cycles, of the character applied to the condenser in Specification 650,988, and condenser plates 12 and 15 may carry a layer of insulating material e.g. polyvinyl chloride or polystyrene. The field in the first condenser may also be constant in direction and intensity. The backing fabric or film may be the same materials as referred to in Specifications 697,739 and the fibres may also be any of these materials. The adhesive may be plasticised polyvinyl acetate as disclosed in Specification 644,002, plasticised butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, (see Specification 697,739) a gellable polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl acetate paste, a heat hardenable polymer of diallyl or allyl phthalate, rubber latex, or aqueous polyvinyl acetate dispersions.
